Qinhuangdao, in the northeast of Hebei Province, is a tourist port city in North China opening to the outside world. A port screened by the Yanshan Mountain and faced with the Bohai Sea, ice free all year round and a coastal city with beautiful landscape, Qinhuangdao has a population of 320,000. Originally a small seaside village, Qinghuangdao became known with Emperor Qin Shi Huang's sea coast tour as early as in 215 B.C. when he had royal missions sent to cross the sea from the place to look for elixir.

Qinhuangdao has Shanhaiguan Pass on its east and Beidaihe to the west, a famous seaside resort with soft and smooth beaches, calm water surface and light serfs. Beidaihe is dotted with several scores of sea bathing grounds. Backed on to the mountains and facing the sea, Shanhaiguan Pass is strategically located, formed of a gate tower, watch tower, ramparts and walls built in the Ming Dynasty, and known as "the First Pass Under Heaven". Six kilometres east of Shanhaiguan, there is also the Shrine of Meng Jiangnu built in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Other scenic attractions include Pigeon's Net, Tiger Rock, Lotus Seedpot Hill, Temple of the Goddess of Mercy and Old Dragon Head.
