Situated at the north-east end of the island, Xiamen International Airport is 12 kilometres away from downtown Xiamen. It now has 33 airlines dispatching 180 flights every week from Xiamen to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guilin, Kunming, Qingdao, Nanchang, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Changzhou, Hefei, Dalian, Shenyang, Harbin, Changchun, Lan zhou, Zhengzhou, Urumchi, Shenzhen, Jinan, Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, and other Asian cities.Inaugurated in March l984, Xiamen Aviation Co., Ltd. now handles passenger-cargo business on its own, and as an agent for the Xiamen flights of CAAC and other airlines. The domestic China Eastern Airlines and the Hong Kong-based Dragonair have their representative offices in Xiamen.
The Xiamen Port is a port of vast area, deep water, mild waves, and is ice-free and generally unsilted with 64.5 km natural coast lines around the port area and at least 12-metre water depth. Ships of 100-thousand
tonnage can be anchored at the inner port, while 50,000 tonnage ships can pull in for loading and unloading. Xiamen Port now possesses 37 docks and wharves ranging from small to large sizes, of which 4 (including one
container dock) are for 10,000 to 50,000- tonnage, and 8 for 1,000 to 5,000-tonnage vessels. A railway line for special use is available within the port area. The second phase of construction of Dongdu Harbour is under way.
At present, Xiamen is open to navigation with 50-odd ports of more than 30 countries and regions including Australia, Japan, Singapore, U.S.A., C.I.S., Canada and Hong Kong etc. Regular cargo services between Xiamen and Hong Kong and Japan are available as well as regular passenger services from Xiamen to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Wenzhou, and Guangzhou.
Besides the well equipped Xiamen Railway Station, the Xiamen North Railway Station, situated at Gaoqi, has been extended for transport of import and export goods.
The Fuzhou-Xiamen and Zhangzhou-Xiamen Highways link
up Xiamen with every part of Fujian Province and with Provinces
of Guang dong, Jiangxi and Zhejiang as well. Xiamen boasts a
diversified highway transportation with State-owned, Sino-
foreign funded & Sino-foreign cooperative passenger and freight
enterprises. Passenger services are provided everyday between Xiamen and Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Longyan,Shantou, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, with deluxe limousines
and light buses. Container freight services are also available
between Xiamen and Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The Xiamen
Bridge, a bridge spanning the straits, which was completed and
put into use not long ago, greatly facilitates the highway traffic
and transportation of Xiamen Island with the Mainland.
Foreign investment projects and the key state construction projects will be given the priorities in survey, design, construction, installation and electricity supply on condition that the formalities are all gone through and power supply is feasible.
